Pastor Austin has been doing trainings for small group leaders and holding monthly assemblies. These trainings are held with the resources within the membership. Members contribute to hire venues for the monthly meetings. Where impossible to raise the finances, most training has been conducted in the small groups.
National Expansion:
There has been a great desire to spread across the country and we have seen the beginning of CTK fellowships in three major towns of Kisumu, Mombasa and most recently Bungoma in western Kenya where Pastor Austin trained 60 group leaders.
A New Outreach:
After the training of leaders by the Oasis Africa team, there was a new wave of needs that became so overwhelming especially after the recent election. The country was affected and we decided to have more outreach programmes in the slums and estates where we have small groups. This saw the launch of CTK home. A community based organization set up to offer the following outreach opportunities:
• Education support for orphans
• Feeding program
• Foster program
• Vocational training
• Home based care for People Living With Aids
• Counseling and Rehabilitation
Education support:
The group currently has sponsored six children in Secondary schools who could not proceed without assistance. There is another group of 10 total orphans who passed primary level and could not get finances for the secondary level. This group will be supported only when funds are available, since the need is enormous. The girl in the picture is known as Quinter Atieno; she was rescued by Pastor Austin from doing odd jobs e.g. laundry and baby sitting and taken back to school early this term. Quinter is in need of about $200 per year for the next two years to finish her secondary education.
Feeding Program:
The small groups in Mathare Valley and the neighboring slums started a weekly feeding program for the most needy members in the group. This encouraged many families to come to CTK meetings and during the post election violence, the needs doubled up. We currently have about 200 families who need food donations on weekly basis. There are different organizations on the ground, but due to the ethnic animosities, some of these donations only trickle down along tribal line. CTK homes have purposed to break through tribal and discriminative barriers so that Christ love can be felt through their actions.
Foster Program:
There was a need to provide homes for the total orphans who have no place to live. The future plan will be to provide an orphanage to take care of the homeless children especially those who have been rehabilitated from the streets. Currently some group members have decided to offer their homes fro specific selected children. Sister Gladys started by hosting John Githinji who could not afford secondary school boarding fees, and is currently homeless. John’s parents passed away and some of his uncles took their property, hence driving him to seek refuge with some friend's. Sister Gladys took him in and has currently taken him to school.
Vocational Training/Income Generating Activities:
The group members who were so gifted in curios and ornamental artifacts as well as wood carvings began a program of training school leavers , single parents, widows and former drug addicts and alcohol vendors who give their lives to Jesus so that they can have an alternative income generating activity. The group made products with support from the Nairobi Emergency fund that was sent by CTK brethren from the USA. During the launch of this project, some artifacts were sold and the proceeds are helping to support the secondary school children. The group intends to open a curios shop in Nairobi and also acquire space in the tourist market commonly known as Masaai Market.
Home based care for people living with Aids:
The group is currently taking care of three widows living with aids; this program is low key because of the training and finances required. The three women will be the pilot project as we keep our arrows out to be a source of encouragement to the fellowship.
Counseling and Rehabilitation:
The group has benefited from the two Denise's who were trained under the sponsorship of CTK Friday Harbor. We have set up an office where the new believers saved from drugs, alcoholism, prostitution and gangsterism e.g. Mungiki & Taliban are given closer attention. They hold weekly clinics and we have seen great changes in the lives of many.
