Who is Pilgrim Uganda?
Pilgrim Uganda is an indigenous Ugandan Christian outreach ministry, registered since 2002 with the government of Uganda as a nonprofit organization (Reg. No. S5914/388. Pilgrim provides food, meidicine and trauma counseling to refugees of Uganda's decades-long civil war who live in refugee camps in the northeastern region of Uganda.
Calvin Echodu, Pilgrim's founder, is a former child soldier and has a wrenching story of his abduction and eventual rescue. His tale of Christian conversion is spine tingling. He and friends made valiant efforts to help the Ugandans trapped in the IDP (Internally Displaced Persons) camps in northern Uganda. One of his friends was killed as part of that effort. Calvin felt deeply called to respond to the plight of the suffering populations forgotten and abandoned in the IDP camps in northeastern Uganda. Founding Board members Anthony Esenu and Wilson Opio shared Calvin's passion for the hurting, as well as his faith in the possibilities of restoration and repair for these communities. Together they dreamed of raising a witness of Christ's revolutionary love in the midst of these difficult conditions, and of lighting a pathway towards both temporal and eternal hope. In 2001, Pilgrim was born. Since then Calvin has brought food, clothing, and medical care to these camps
plus bringing at least 500 orphans to Soroti for education, counseling, medical care, and safety.
Dorothy Caplow-Echodu is a part time Friday Harbor resident. She is a graduate student at the U of W. She has had a heart for the child soldiers and child sex-slaves of the Ugandan conflict from many years. As part of her desire to help, friends introduced her to Calvin Echodu of Soroti, Uganda. She and Calvin met via internet and then in person at a trauma seminar in Olympia, Washington several years ago. Dorothy traveled to Uganda to see Calvin’s efforts with Pilgrim. Dorothy founded The Three Loaves Fund to assist Pilgrim and groups like them with donations from the west. Three Loaves is headquartered in Seattle.
Calvin and Dorothy were married in 2006 and had their first child in 2008.
There are many ways of supporting the efforts of Pilgrim Uganda including emergency food relief, efforts to fight malaria, supporting students of Beacon College and so much more.
